Tyler Perry On Not Wanting Monogamy & His Movies Getting Slighted By Theaters

Tyler Perry recently spoke about not wanting marriage for himself, despite writing/producing/directing 2 successful movies based on the institution. He tells the NY Post that monogamy aint his game: "I now have homes all over," he said. "LA, Atlanta where I grew up, New York. But I live alone. In all my adult life I've had five serious relationships with women. And I'm not sure monogamy is for me." Interesting. Tyler also sent out a lengthy letter to his mailing list of fans and put on his website. He's addressing the unfair tactics of movie theaters and how they refuse to put his movies on the same number of screens as everyone else's movies. Despite the total sell outs opening weekend. Wow! Sorry it's taken me a day or so to collect myself but I was out of the country. Friday, after my last promotion for the movie, I flew over to my little piece of heaven. I spent all of Resurrection weekend in prayer and meditation, talking to God, my Mother, and myself. On Monday, I dialed into the States to see how the movie did. I was blown away and so grateful to you! YOU HAVE NO IDEA! THANK YOU, do you hear?! I cannot begin to tell you how much I appreciate you for going to see WHY DID I GET MARRIED TOO. Believe it or not, after opening 9 movies in 5 years, it still never gets old. I am so thankful that you are on my side. God bless you for that. Wasn't it incredible?! What about Janet's performance? She blew me away. If you haven't seen it, this is a good time to see it. It was sold out practically everywhere opening weekend. I want you know that there is a reason for that…being sold out is a goodthing, don't get me wrong, but from the first movie to this one I have been fighting for more screens. For some reason, I have never been able to get my movies to play in more than 2,150 theaters. I have fought until I'm blue in the face and nobody can give me a clear cut answer. To put this in perspective, when most movies open, take for instance CLASH OF THE TITANS, it was on 3,800 screens, or the Miley Cyrus movie, which was on 3,100. Most movies open on between 3,000 to 5,000 screens. Anyway, if I keep fighting, maybe one day I'll get enough screens so that you won't have to be packed on top of each other, as well as be turned away time and time again after driving all the way to the theater. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, I just want there to be adequate seating for the demand. That's all I'm saying. Trust me, I still know that this is a blessing. So, sorry for the inconvenience, but thank you for sticking with it, and me. Hollywood was blown away by this opening weekend and I was too! Thank you again! Can we shift gears for a second? I want to talk about Haiti. Every day for weeks, the news media sensationalized Haiti. Now you don't hear a thing about it. I knew that would happen. It was the same with New Orleans after Katrina, and what I learned in that time is to wait until it's old news and then you will really begin to see the true needs of people. A few weeks ago it was so chaotic you couldn't understand what was going on but now it's beginning to become clear so, with that, I think that right now is the time for me to get involved. I have identified 4 charities that I will be working with and giving them each $250,000.00. The first one will be Yele Haiti, Wyclef Jean's Organization. After having a long conversation with him, I am truly assured that not only will my monies get to the people at the heart of Haiti, but also the monies that you have given will get there as well. In total about $130,000.00 was raised here online. I will divide that four ways so that it will be added to each of my donations. I will be giving you progress reports and updating you as time goes on. I will also announce the next charity as soon as I understand what their strategy will be in Haiti. Despite the theater restrictions, Tyler still pulled in almost the same amountof money opening weekend that Clash of the Titans did. Go figure.

Why wont hollywood let Tyler be great? They're the ones losing out on the extra dough. So is Madea Tyler's Sasha Fierce??? I can't. LOLOL I wonder if this bit of info was taken out of context. Knowing this site.... I don't care if he is gay or not. I DO care that his movies are terrible. How are you gonna do Janet and Jill like that?? How are you gonna do Angela Bassett like that??? He has so much potential to be a great filmaker but he doesn't want to collaborate with other writers and directors. UGH!!!!

Where I live they do not play

Where I live they do not play his movies in the suburbs (basically where there is a majority white population). Its unfair, but when I go to the movies to watch, the entire audience is mainly black. Therefore, his movies do not appear to appeal to white audiences anyways. LOL I do think the man is gay, but I'm just going to say it's because I'm used to seeing him play a woman, so I can't take his "manhood" seriously. *kanye shrug*

Another thing I notice is that for a big opening weekend, you will buy a ticket for a Black film, but get the stub for the BIG blockbuster action flick instead. This has happened to me MANY times, and is curious indeed. ///// That practice is called kiting and studios do it to skew the numbers in favor of mainstream movies. It's all about the # of tickets sold. Corrupt system is Hollywood. I don't like TP's movies -- too formulaic and emotional; different movie, same plot. He gay. Wait, nix that! He prolly gay but w/e.

Oh yeah, I understand making money, but Tyler is a not very appreciative of the people who made him in my opinion. In the worse economy in a long time, his play tickets were the same cost or maybe even more than normal. I understand he has a multimillion dollar operation to run with lots of people counting on him, but he could have taken a loss for his public. How many extravagant cruises can you take and gifts for your already rich friends. Just ridiculous...he lost a lot of 'cool points' with me for this!

Not only are they slighting

Not only are they slighting Tyler's movies but all movies with predominantly black cast. Where I live we only get to see Tyler's movies but movies from little known black director's (Famiy Wedding) or movies with a leadin black male (like that movie with Columbus Short)don't play here...its sad to see racism in 2010. I don't care for Tyler Perry's brand of cinema, so I have no interest in his letter. But, I feel that Tyler Perry is repressed, therefore shouldn't be the voice of "Black American Cinema." I would respect his movie making a tad bit more, if he were honest about his sexuality.

The easiest way to tell that Tyler is getting richer by the minute, is by the increase in haters that have his exact skin color! It never ceases to amaze me how black people will make up a flaw to justify hating on blacks that are richer, more ambitious, more hard working and therefore more successful. Any man that can go from sleeping in a car to being rich and owning property all over the world is good in my book. And Tyler Perry is real home owner, not a mortgage payer like the rest of us. Why the hate? Does hating on him get anybodys bills paid? NO Does hating on his romantic life make anyone's partner not creep? NO. So why not be happy that we have ONE director in hollywood keeping black actors employed?! Go see his movies, even if you have to drive far out.

sooo I'm out here in Ottawa and me and my girls were getting amped to see the film opening night JUST TO FIND OUT THAT it's not playing anywhere in the city and only in 9 theatres in ALL OF CANADA. How does this make sense? IT DOESNT! SOOOO me and my girls email the biggest theatre company in the province now, only for them to get back to us and tell us that they don't control what movies are played and where and when and to holler at the distributor. SO WHAT AM I GOING TO DO!? HOLLER AT THE MUTHAFUKIN DISTRIBUTORS. SHIT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. THEY HAVE THE MOST RIDICULOUS SHIT PLAYING BUT NO TYLER PERRY? NO BLACK MOVIES? That's some institutionalized racism and I'm not even one for playing the race card, but I know there's a market and damn well demand for his movies here and other black movies, so no it's not that it won't make money it's just that these shitheads don't want to play them. I want to go out and support my black people by purchasing tickets to their movies, but am not afforded the opportunity. It's so sad and very disgusting.
